Devilfish and Ocean Rolls

Pacific Crest Trail Thru-Hike: Day 113

We’re back at Shelter Cove. We got a ride from Devilfish, the water cache trail angel. He told us Trump might shut the government down September 30th, so we should target finishing the trail by then. That gives us one month to get through Washington. With the (now 100+ mile) road walk and a September 30th target finish date, we should be right on schedule to meet Arianna at Timberline lodge on August 31st. We don’t really have a plan for the roadwalk except for how we get back into Bend. After that, I’m going to navigate, relying on Google Maps, Gaia GPS and Forest Service Road maps to piece together a route.

We met Devilfish at 6:50 at the Sparrow bakery (a place I looked up), and Corey’s dad told us we had to get an ocean roll. He bought almost a dozen for the girls back at the house. An ocean roll is a roll made with croissant dough so it’s super flaky, and it has a cardamom glaze. It reminded me of the Downtowner roll at Sunstreet Breads in Minneapolis. It was delicious. I could’ve eaten four. Devilfish ate gummy bears and Coca-cola for breakfast.

We only walked 21 miles today—Me, Alex, and Sam—ending in a burn area. Saw a lot of SOBOs, probably bubbling because of coming out of Elk Lake. Vice and Boathouse said they would be starting the road walk today, and seem to be in good spirits. For some odd reason we haven’t been eating too much. When we get back to Bend it would be great to get to go to Bonta and the Sparrow bakery again.

I feel like we’re never going to see our friends again because we’re doing the road walk and then slowing down for Arianna to come walk, but I’m happy Arianna is coming out and would feel pressure to hustle regardless.
