I am a carpenter and designer, living in a small island community on the largest freshwater lake in the world. I am deeply invested in disrupting the cycle of intergenerational trauma in my own lineage and my communities. I am more interested in the exploration of questions than the proving of answers.

Mile 1559.1 to Mile 1591.5 (5.7 miles from Etna)
Pacific Crest Trail Thru-Hike: Day 97

Things to remember from today:

  • Melodic cows sound like brachiosaurus

  • Avoiding horse diarrhea on trail and during break when we entered the Trinity Alps Wilderness. I can tell this area is beautiful, but the sky is foggy from wildfire smoke and it dulls the mountains.

  • Lots of day hikers on trail today

  • Haven’t run out of fuel yet! One meal left before Etna.

  • 5.7 miles from hitching spot into Etna

  • Had to walk 3+ miles further than desired/targeted today because of so many dead, burned trees

  • Actually got up at 4am, started walking at 5am, did 32.7 intensely challenging miles and still got in the tent by 8:50pm.

  • Ate Thai Curry twice today

  • Finally made hot chocolate! Yum.

  • Oats with coconut milk + honey + berries for breakfast

  • Finished ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ by Maya Angelou and ‘Son’ by Lois Lowry today. Deciding on book for tomorrow. It could be a longer one!

  • I wonder who we’ll see in Etna. We have been doing such abnormally huge miles (for us) that we keep catching new groups of people. We were hustling to get to Etna on a Saturday. We hustled so hard we’ll get to town early on Friday.
